“Less is Boring”: Discover Maximalism and Learn to Use it with Style

If you think beautiful decor needs to be neutral, clean and full of empty spaces… we have good news: you can break all these rules.

Maximalism is a bold, vibrant and full of personality trend that has been winning the heart (and homes) of those who love to express style through environments. Unlike minimalism, it says with all the letters: “more is more!”

And believe me, applying this aesthetic in your home does not mean visual mess or uncontrolled excess. The secret is to make intentional choices, with a lot of soul, color and emotion. And in this article, I will show you exactly how.

What is maximalism, after all?
Maximalism is about celebrating the abundance of shapes, colors, textures and objects. It’s creating environments that tell stories, that show who you are, where you’ve been and what you love.

It’s a mix of styles, memories and elements that together create a rich and unique aesthetic – without fear of exaggerating, without following strict rules.

How to apply Maximalism without losing harmony? Here are 5 steps:

  1. Choose a bold color palette
Forget the total white. Maximalism loves color! You can mix intense tones like emerald green, mustard, royal blue, burgundy, pink… but the trick is to keep a base palette that guides your choices.

Golden tip: Combine complementary colors or play with different shades of the same family.

  1. Mix prints with confidence
Stripes + floral? Animal print + geometric? In maximalism, these combinations work – as long as you use common colors or different scales of pattern to create visual balance.

Use carpets, cushions, wallpapers and curtains as a creative playground!

  1. Use and abuse of textures
Velvet, wood, linen, marble, rattan, ceramic… the more layers of textures, the more interesting the environment. Touch is as important as vision!

Mix of materials is what gives depth to maximalist space.

  1. Expose what you love
Book collections, paintings, travel souvenirs, vintage objects, plants, eccentric lamps – everything can (and should!) be proudly displayed.

Art galleries on the walls are icons of maximalist style.

  1. Create focal points
Even with so much information, it is important to guide the look. It can be a wall with bold wallpaper, a colorful sofa or a bookshelf with assorted items. Choose 1 or 2 elements to master the scene, the rest complements.
